Speaking of extending runways, one way to extend your runway is for emerging businesses to move their legal work to regional firms where the cost is dramatically less for the same quality (and often, better service). Our firm is one example, but far from the only one. We have 360 lawyers and have a great team representing both VCs and venture-backed companies around the southeast. Our rates, because of our geography, are half or less of what you see in the prominent coastal/money-center firms. Yet, many VC-backed companies continue to pay for the "brand name" firms. Given that most early-stage companies need fairly significant legal work (albeit often not as much as they are paying for, which is a different but important quality-of-service issue), this is a very easy way to lengthen a runway.
